Growing up, I would see my family, especially my grandparents, be engrossed in these Korean Dramas. The dramas would mainly be centered around some type of love triangle or conflict, typically ending with a dramatic cliffhanger at the end of each episode. The plots on these dramas followed very similarly to the telenovela’s that we are learning in class.
Up until a few weeks ago, when this FYOS class started, I thought that telenovelas were a typical drama or TV show but in Spanish. I had no real idea what a true telenovela looked like. What I learned is that a telenovela does not have to be in Spanish, but can also be set in other languages in different countries. I didn't realize Korean Dramas and Turkish dramas could be considered a telenovela.
Before this class my idea of a telenovela was something similar to the iconic Jane the Virgin. This TV show followed a Girl name who is a Virgin. Being a product of a teenage pregnancy, she made a promise to her Grandmother, God, and to herself to say a virgin until marriage. However, while she was with another man, Michael, she accidentally became artificially inseminated by another man. With all the dramatic twists and turns and my limited knowledge of telenovelas, for me Jane the Virgin was the epitome of a great telenovela. What I didn’t know was that Jane the Virgin is not a telenovela, but rather based off of another telenovela!
My idea on what a telenovela was completely different that what it actually encompasses. Telenovelas can contain a large variety of plots, languages, and settings. When choosing a telenovela to watch, I am excited to see all the different types of dramas that I can chose from
