Love and Death in "Quien Mato a Sara"

The story of “Quien Mato a Sara” centers around the suspicious death of Sara Guzman, which occurs many years prior to the events of the story itself. The story focuses on Alex Guzman, Sara’s brother who was framed for her murder, and his quest to discover who actually was responsible for his sister’s death. His list of suspects is all members of the Lazcano family and their business partners, a situation that becomes increasingly complicated as he becomes more involved with different members of the family. He specifically becomes romantically involved with Elisa, the youngest Lazcano child, who was too young to even remember Sara’s death. This relationship functions as the primary relationship in the show. The B-plot relationship involves Sara and her boyfriend at the time of her death, Rodolfo Lazcano, the eldest Lazcano brother.

Neither of these stories remains particularly close to the forefront of the story. The majority of the story, especially in the second season, focuses on Sara’s past and the white-collar crime, and the, rather volatile, family dynamic the Lazcanos are involved in.

Elisa and Alex’s story is pushed almost all the way to the back for much of the story. We see very few tender moments between the two of them that build their love story. Their story is obviously of a much more realistic brand from the very first time we see them together. The two are rarely together in any scene that is not markedly sexual or tense. When we see them together it is usually in the wake of violence and their Romeo and Juliet story takes a backseat to the overarching plot as Alex is incredibly invested in uncovering his sister’s killer.

The story that receives more of these tender moments in the show is Sara and Rodolfo’s. The two are shown on screen in high saturation, brightly lit, scenes taking place by an idyllic lakeside that seem like pastoral reveries. They are constantly shown cuddling and laughing and the actor that plays a young Rodolfo and Sara have great on-screen chemistry with each other. In the first season, the love between the two seems intense and true because of all of these factors. In the second season, the audience learns more about Sara as a character, and this once traditional “rosal” seeming relationship becomes less idyllic. What the audience comes to know about Sara’s troubling past remains unbeknownst to Rodolfo for (at least) the first half of the season.

Without this knowledge, Rodolfo continues reeling from Sara’s death. His love for Sara presumably ran so deep that he keeps a vasectomy he got after Sara, who was pregnant at the time, died secret from his wife who he ends up divorcing after prolonged marital issues and finding out about her infidelity. The depth of his love for Sara keeps him hurting for years after her death traumatizes him. For this, in my opinion, more likable couple, the primary obstacle to their relationship is the grave.
