The strength of Teresa Mendoza

The telenovela that I am watching, "La Reina del Sur", starts off with a woman named Teresa Mendoza who is going through the traumatic death of her boyfriend, and is now being chased by the same people who murdered him. Her boyfriend, Guero, was part of an extensive drug trafficking scheme. Guero stepped out of line from his superiors, which ultimately led to his demise. All of the collateral damage of Guero's mischief, however, fell on to Teresa, his girlfriend. With all of this drama exploding in Teresa's life, she finds confidence, personal growth, and fearlessness through it all.

At the start of the telenovela, when Guero's death was first announced, Teresa was frantic and afraid, like any other normal human being. Not only was she extremely reliant on Guero for protection and stability, but she was also mourning his death. On top of it all, she was being chased by the people who killed Guero. I can only imagine the thoughts running through her head. She was running for her life, with her only source of protection gone.

In these moments, however, she finds courage. During her first encounter with Guero's killers, while one of the cartel goons were sexually assaulting her, she finds strength, and reaches for her gun, and shoots him in the head. She then uses her brain, and bargains with Epifanio for his help. While this trade also leads to conflict, she uses her head, and flees from death time and time again.

Teresa's growth in her courage, smarts, and witt, is impressive but not surprising. In earlier scenes, it showed that Guero, her deceased boyfriend, did not easily sweep Teresa off her feet like he did with other girls. She made him work to impress her, and she showed that she was not a push over. Just like the later scenes where Teresa is running for her life, she has always shown grit. Unfortunately, she just needed a dramatic life or death situation to completely bring her toughness and fortitude out.

I believe that Teresa's tenacity is something that we should all look up to and strive to be like. In a world where women are shown as damsels in distress, or always in need of a hero, Teresa shows that she can be her own hero. When life gets tough, and traumatic events occur, Teresa shows that she will not be broken or defined by situations that she was put in and persevered through it all.
