"La Reina Del Sur" has been renewed for a second as well as a third season. But what about this show makes the audience come back to the show?
Is it the love stories portrayed in the show? This show's main protagonist suffers numerous hardships, and her love life is no different. Teressa and Santiago are the main love story currently in the show. As discussed in class, there are factors that lead to viewers falling in love with a relationship.
The first factor is physical appearance which is met by the actors in the show as they are both beautiful. This leads to the second element, the male protagonist's smile. Santiago is the current male protagonist and steals the show with his smile. She and Santiago have an off-the-charts chemistry and are greatly talented actors. Moreover, there are numerous romantic elements to their story. For example, they move away to live by the beach and work together, which is very romantic. The size of their obstacles is pretty huge too. They have many issues, like Dris's obsession with Teressa and him trying to break them, and his job constantly endangering his life. As the audience sees this relationship grow from scratch, they feel a connection to it. The dramatic irony in the show continually has the watchers scream at their tv screens.
Other elements of the show, the friendship between her and Fatima, are also essential. She and Fatima have a sort of sisterly bond, which adds a wholesome element to a rather intense show. This show also depicts various social issues like racism, drug trafficking, and human trafficking.
While these elements are essential, they are not the primary motivation for the fans to come back. Kate del Castillo is an outstanding actress as she beautifully portrays the complexities of Terresa Mendoza wonderfully. Teressa goes through a lot of misfortunes, from mourning the loss of her lover to running for her life to constantly having to demand respect in the male-dominated society. More than the love stories, she is the main reason watchers come back to watch the show. The audience feels a bond with her and is always rooting for her. They see her develop from a naive girl to the best drug trafficker. She slowly starts taking the reins of her fate.

ReplyDeleteI really love your analysis of the characters in La Reina del Sur. Nearly everyone in the entertainment industry looks for those “it” factors in their characters and cast that draw in an audience, although it’s difficult to pinpoint what those factors are.
Although I think those physical features you mentioned, such as attractiveness and “the smile”, I think the real thing that draws people in is the relationships. You can’t have drama without relationships. The chemistry between actors is vital for this, but so is the acting, dialogue, plot development, music, lighting, and perspective of the show.
However, I also think you’re right about the draw towards the main protagonist, Teresa. Having a strong protagonist that the audience can root for is essential, and based on what I have read about La Reina del Sur, she is phenomenal. It takes talent to not only portray your own character well but work well with the rest of the cast to create tensions within the show and therefore the audience.
